Description: A large rectangular folded sheet-metal buckle plate, recessed for the frame, slotted for the pin, and with holes for nine rivets (five of which survive) to secure the strap. The front of the plate is decorated with a linear square pattern and has possible traces of gilt around some of the rivet holes. The attachment end is square. The folded back section is probably incomplete, as it extends only to the first row of three rivets.

Description: A double loop asymmetrical buckle with separate strap and pin bars. It has a sub-oval main loop with an angled outer end, and a rectangular strap loop. The pin bar was notched at its centre to locate the pin, but wear has reduced the notch to an open gap. The pin is missing.

Single Loop Oval Buckle https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/artefact/medieval/buckles-and-buckle-plates/single-loop-buckles/single-loop-oval-buckle-54504.html Mon, 22 Jul 2019 14:06:11 GMT Single loop buckles Single Loop Oval Buckle
Description: A single loop oval buckle with narrowed and offset strap bar and expanded outer end with V-shaped pin-notch. The buckle is decorated with a pattern of multiple square cells, arranged symmetrically in rows and columns with traces of blue enamel in and between them. There are two panels of this pattern separated by the pin-notch, and a further two, of smaller size, on the frame at each end of the strap bar. The recorder notes traces of gilt on the raised metal surfaces. The strap bar is now bent and the pin is missing.

Champlevé-enamelled buckles of this type were mostly made in France, many at the famous Limoges factory. Surviving examples are quite rare.

Box Buckle https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/artefact/medieval/buckles-and-buckle-plates/single-loop-buckles/box-buckle-54366.html Fri, 05 Apr 2019 09:20:46 GMT Single loop buckles Box Buckle
Description: A zoomorphic 'box buckle' of the medieval period. It is cast in the form of a very stylised animal's head, possibly a devolved version of the ram's head type, an example of which is recorded as UKDFD 43647. The head is hollow and open at both ends. It has a rearward-projecting integral loop, but the pin is missing.

The exact use of these objects is uncertain, but it would seem that the free end of the strap was fed through the 'neck' of the animal's head and secured in tension by the pin, which was either hinged on the projecting loop, as the present example, or on the back of the head, as UKDFD 23207, although the latter form may represent a makeshift repair.

A closely similar example is recorded as UKDFD 29950. See also UKDFD 23088 and UKDFD 41876.

The plate depicts a central lion passant regardant, standing left but looking back over its shoulder within an engraved linear and wavy-lined border. The buckle attachment lugs are now missing on the left hand side of the plate. The back is plain, with a recessed area behind the animal.
