Description: An incomplete pair of Anglo-Saxon tweezers with slightly flared arms. Both arms are decorated along each edge with a line of triangular punch-marks, and there is a beaded transverse line about mid-way along the length. The bow has a series of longitudinal ridges and grooves. One arm is broken and about half the length is missing.

The tweezers were found near to UKDFD 16566, 16675 and 16810, all of which date circa 6th century AD. It seems likely, therefore, that the tweezers, which are normally difficult to date closely, will be of a similar period.

Description: One arm only of a pair of Anglo-Saxon tweezers. It is slightly flared, and has two transverse grooves at the bow end. There is no other decoration evident, but deep scratch-marks are present on the front face. The tweezers were found near to UKDFD 16566, 16675 and 16810, all of which date circa 6th century AD. It seems likely, therefore, that the tweezers, which are normally difficult to date closely, will be of a similar period.

Description: A broken pair of Anglo-Saxon tweezers with flared arms, each of which is decorated with punched ring-and-dot motifs and incised border lines. There are seven ring-and-dot motifs on each arm, four arranged in lozenge formation at the flared end, and the remaining three spaced along the centre-line. The two arms are separate, having broken at the looped end, and were found about 20 metres apart. The wide date range shown reflects the variance found in the sources consulted. Cf. PAS: NMS-573667

Description: A pair of Anglo-Saxon tweezers with flared arms, each of which is decorated with ring-and-dot motifs and incised lines. Single lines run along the sides of the arms, and there are short transverse lines below the loop and midway along the length. The ring-and-dot motifs are confined to the wider end of the arms, and run along the centre and across the flared grip. The wide date range shown reflects the variance found in the sources consulted. Tweezers https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/artefact/early-medieval/cosmetic-implements/tweezers-24910.html Tue, 20 Apr 2010 00:00:00 GMT Cosmetic implements Tweezers
Description: An incomplete pair of copper-alloy tweezers. The arms of the tweezers are riveted together at the top end with a single disc-headed copper-alloy rivet. Above the riveted joint, there would originally have been a bow, such that the tweezers were formed from a single piece of metal, but the bow is now missing. The arms, which are parallel except as described below, are each decorated at the upper end with an incised saltire in a rectangular panel. The rivet-hole is drilled above the saltire and through this panel. The gripping section is laterally waisted and rounded at the edges, but increased in thickness. It is defined at its upper end by an incised transverse line. The jaws have rounded ends. The decoration of the tweezers is closely similar to that on a pair found in a grave during excavations at the Frilford, Oxfordshire cemetery. The cemetery is dated from the late Roman period to the end of the sixth century AD. Another generally comparable pair of tweezers on the PAS database (BH-CC67B7) is dated 5th - 7th century at the time of validation. The parallel arms of the tweezers of this period contrast with the usually flared arms of those of the later Anglo-Saxon period.

Ear Scoop https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/artefact/early-medieval/cosmetic-implements/ear-scoop-31034.html Tue, 12 Apr 2011 00:00:00 GMT Cosmetic implements Ear Scoop
Description: An uncertain small artefact, probably an ear scoop dating to the early medieval period. The implement is rectangular in section, with flattened terminal ends. The upper terminal is wedge-shaped in plan, with a central hole and three notches on the upper edge. The flattened lower end is simply rounded. The face is further decorated with stamped ring-and-dot motifs on the upper half and oblique indentations on the lower. The scoop would be attached to a suspension ring singularly, or with other toilet articles such as; UKDFD 17639. The decorative features can be compared to; UKDFD 21392, for dating purposes. See also; NMS-4EE2C2, as similar.
