Spoon Handle https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/artefact/roman/spoons/spoon-handle-54189.html Thu, 24 Jan 2019 12:08:40 GMT Spoons Spoon Handle
Description: A copper-alloy spoon handle of the Roman period. Comprising the stem and a small fragment of the bowl. It retains the characteristic offset which attaches the stem to the bowl. The stem is rectangular in section at the bowl end and has notched decoration on the upper surface for approximately half its length, it then becomes circular in section and tapers towards the tip, (now missing).

Spoon https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/artefact/roman/spoons/spoon-35690.html Thu, 19 Jan 2012 00:00:00 GMT Spoons Spoon
Description: A small copper-alloy spoon of the Roman period. The spoon had a round bowl, the edges of which have been folded over and hammered flat (possibly to make a tool?). The handle is plain and tapers to a point. At the bowl end it has also been flattened by hammering.

The spoon is of Crummy Type 1 (see References below), dated circa AD 50-200.

Spoon https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/artefact/roman/spoons/spoon-2902.html Tue, 04 Apr 2006 00:00:00 GMT Spoons Spoon
Description: Copper-alloy spoon bowl and spoon handle of the Roman period. The finder advises that these two separate pieces were found in close proximity to each other. However, athough they are both from spoons of the Roman period, they are not part of the same artefact. The copper-alloy spoon handle has broken at the point where it met the bowl, and it can be seen from the fracture that the two parts were offset. The handle is straight and undecorated, and tapers towards the tail end, where there is evidence of a break. Had the artefact been complete, it is likely that it would have tapered to a point. Such spoons (known as cochleare or ’rat-tail’ spoons) were multi-functional, the pointed end serving as an aid for prising out shell fish and snails etc. The copper-alloy bowl also shows evidence at the fracture point that it was offset, but almost all of the handle is missing. The bowl is circular and dished except for a small rectangular flat section where it joined the handle. Similar examples are illustrated in the Colchester Archaeological Report 2. The Roman small finds from excavations in Colchester 1971-9, fig. 73, No. 2016 being probably the closest parallel. Hattatt also illustrates similar types in Ancient Brooches and Other Artefacts.
