Description: William I 'sword type' (BMC VI) cut halfpenny.

The mint is probably Oxford, as the moneyer's name, Wulfwig, rendered as PIILFPI (= PVLFPI) on the coin, does not appear to occur elsewhere. However, caution is necessary, as it could also be an abbreviation of the name 'Wulfwine', which occurs for several mints, although limited checks suggest that this is unlikely.

Description: William I cut halfpenny, bonnet type, BMC II, struck at Thetford. Chipped at one corner.

At least three Thetford moneyers with names beginning 'Go' are recorded as having struck coins of this issue: Goda, Godric and Godwine.

Description: William I 'Canopy Type' penny of Lincoln.

No other BMC Type III penny struck by Wulfsige at Lincoln has been traced, and it is possible that this is the first recorded example. Several of his coins from the preceding ('Bonnet Type') issue are known, however, so it is not surprising that he was still active at this time.

Image 4 shows the coin in the as-found state.

Description: William I 'Canopy Type' (BMC III) penny of Chester. Flan slightly bent and cracked, but complete.

The moneyer, Friothekest, is recorded as striking coins of BMC Type II, where his name is usually rendered as Frithegist, but no other coin of BMC Type III struck in his name has been traced.

Description: William I 'two sceptres' type (BMC IV) cut halfpenny. Chipped at one end.

Moneyers active during the reigns of William I and William II, and signing their name 'SIPORD', are recorded for the mints of Colchester, Lincoln and Winchester. In the present case, Winchester can be excluded as a possibility, as no version of the mint signature contains the letter 'L', which is clearly the final letter of the reverse legend. In the case of Colchester, the first occurrence of the name is on William II coins of type BMC III (or possibly BMC II?). In the case of Lincoln, however, a coin of William I type BMC V is known with the legend SIPORD N LINCOLI (H R Mossop, The Lincoln Mint, plate LXXXII, No.26). It seems most likely, therefore, that the present coin was struck at Lincoln and the full reverse legend would read SIPORD ON LINCOL.

Description: William I 'profile right' type (BMC VII) penny, struck at Thetford.

E J Harris, (The moneyers of the Norman kings and the types they are known to have struck, SCMB July/August 1987), lists the present moneyer as striking coins of BMC types II-V at Thetford. It is possible that coins of later types have been discovered since that time, but no other record of a BMC VII coin in his name has been traced.

Description: William I penny, 'two stars' (BMC V) type, very probably struck at Southwark. Broken and incomplete flan.

No other example of a William I penny struck at Southwark by Edpord has been traced. However, the moneyer is known to have worked there during the reign of William II.
