Unidentified Penny https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/coins/unidentified-coins/unidentified-penny-23073.html Tue, 19 Jan 2010 00:00:00 GMT Unidentified coins Unidentified Penny
Description: An unidentified penny, probably produced during the 15th century.

Almost all of the legends are off the flan or not struck up, but the presence of a quatrefoil at the centre of the reverse would suggest that the coin is either an English issue of the mint of York, or an Irish issue of Dublin or Waterford. (The quatrefoil is also found on coins of Drogheda and Trim, but the reverse legend excludes both mints, as it can be seen to begin with CIVITAS, rather than VILLA.) It is, of course, also possible that the coin is a contemporary forgery.

Quarter Noble of Uncertain Status https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/coins/unidentified-coins/quarter-noble-of-uncertain-status-23740.html Sun, 21 Feb 2010 00:00:00 GMT Unidentified coins Quarter Noble of Uncertain Status
Description: A quarter noble bearing the titles of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy (1363-1404) and Count of Flanders (1384-1404), but the arms of England, as used between the reigns of Edward III and Henry IV.

The coin has been weighed by two jewellers, who advise that it weighs 1 gram. This is barely half the weight (c.1.9g) of a genuine quarter noble of the period.

The status of the coin is uncertain, but the low weight suggests the possibility that it is made of base metal (cast?), which has been gilded. The combination of English arms and Burgundian/Flemish titles suggests that it is a 'fantasy piece', and could be quite modern.

A definitive assessment of the coin's status would require physical examination and analytical tests.

Unidentified Penny https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/coins/unidentified-coins/unidentified-penny-22859.html Fri, 08 Jan 2010 00:00:00 GMT Unidentified coins Unidentified Penny
Description: An unidentified penny, probably struck during the 15th century.

Almost all of the legends are off the flan or not struck up, but the presence of a quatrefoil at the centre of the reverse would suggest that the coin is either an English issue of the mint of York, or an Irish issue of Dublin or Waterford. (The quatrefoil is also found on coins of Drogheda and Trim, but the reverse legend excludes both mints, as it can be seen to begin with CIVI, rather than VILLA.) It is, of course, also possible that the coin is a contemporary forgery.

The case for an Irish attribution is not supported by the bases of the letters at the beginning of the third quarter, where DVB (Dublin) or WAT (Waterford) would be expected. The coin is also overweight for an Irish penny of the time, and the style of the bust is unfamiliar.

The case for a York penny, where the first three letters of the legend would be EBO, is slightly stronger, with a possibility that the first letter is an 'E'. It is, however, far from convincing.

Unusually, the quatrefoil on the reverse is orientated such that its lobes are between the arms of the cross, rather than in line with them. This orientation has been noted only on pennies of the leaf-pellet issue of Henry VI (Spink 1924 & 1925 - cf. UKDFD 31970), although it may occur on other issues. Leaf-pellet pennies have a leaf on the breast of the king, which cannot be confirmed on the present coin. There is, however, evidence of double-striking on the obverse, which affects the appearance of the bust and may obscure markings on it.
