Description: Stephen penny, ’Watford’ type, BMC I. The few legible letters of the reverse legend suggest that the coin was probably struck by Dereman at London.

Description: A rare variant 'Watford' type penny of Stephen. The variant is currently attributed to a single mint, thought to be Southampton. The usual mint signature on the coins is AN, ANT or ANTOI, but that on the present coin, although ending AN, appears to have a a different initial letter. Unfortunately, the letter is not clear enough to read with certainty.

Stephen Penny, Irregular Issue https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/coins/medieval/stephen-matilda-and-the-anarchy/stephen-penny-irregular-issue-26034.html Thu, 22 Jul 2010 00:00:00 GMT Stephen, Matilda and The Anarchy Stephen Penny, Irregular Issue
Description: An irregular penny struck in the name of 'Henry' during the reign of Stephen. The coin is bent into a 'V' shape, and only a few letters of the obverse and reverse legends are legible.

Coins of this type were formerly attributed to Henry of Anjou, but it is now believed that they were anonymously struck by the Angevin Party, and copy the name (and the Type 15 reverse) of Henry I.

The 'IS' in the place name, together with its position in relation to 'ON', suggests that Bristol is a possibility for the mint. The town is also in the right part of the country for the minting of an Angevin Party coin. However, with no known coins recorded from this mint, it isn't possible to confirm. (As far as the validator is aware, coins are known only of Cardiff, Hereford and Gloucester.)

The only thing certain about the moneyer is that his name ends with an 'E', although the penultimate letter might be guessed.

Description: An irregular penny struck in the name of 'Henry' during the reign of Stephen. Unfortunately, part of the edge is missing and only a few letters of the obverse legend are legible. The reverse legend is completely illegible.

The coin is struck from the same obverse die as Mack 253a and 253b (see References below).

Coins of this type were formerly attributed to Henry of Anjou, but some numismatists now believe that they were anonymously struck by the Angevin Party, and copy the name (and the Type 15 reverse) of Henry I.

Stephen Penny, Irregular Issue https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/coins/medieval/stephen-matilda-and-the-anarchy/stephen-penny-irregular-issue-45768.html Mon, 25 Aug 2014 00:00:00 GMT Stephen, Matilda and The Anarchy Stephen Penny, Irregular Issue
Description: An irregular penny struck during the reign of Stephen, probably by the Angevin Party. It is of a type that has a similar obverse to the regular 'Watford' (BMC I) type of Stephen, and a reverse similar to the last 'Quadrilateral on Cross Fleury' (BMC XV) type of Henry I.

Coins of this type are very rare, and, like the present coin, most of those that survive have only partially legible legends. The obverse legend on the majority contains part of the word HENRICVS (e.g. see UKDFD 32602), which led to them being attributed to Henry of Anjou, son of the Empress Matilda, and future king, Henry II. This attribution is now questioned by some numismatists, who suggest instead that the coins were anonymously struck by the Angevin Party, and copy the name of Henry I.

However, not all of the coins have a legend that is consistent with the reading HENRICVS. A coin of the same type has the partial inscription LELM, and this was very tentatively attributed to William of Gloucester (North 945/1). Again, however, the more recent view is that it is an anonymous coin referring back to William I or William II.

The present coin falls into the latter category - i.e. the surviving part of the obverse legend is not consistent with a reading of HENRICVS. It appears to read ATN, and the right hand part of the immediately preceding letter is a vertical stroke (suggesting I, M or N). It is tempting to associate these letters with the name Matilda, but the N is difficult to explain. The known coins of the Empress Matilda do have the same obverse type, but none have the same reverse. The legends and the relative positions of the letters also differ.

In addition to having an apparently unrecorded obverse legend, the reverse of the coin differs slightly from others of the type. The arms of the cross extend into the band of the legend, whereas the usual type terminate in fleurs within the inner circle. In fact, because of flatness, the form of the terminals is unclear. The fleurs on the corners of the quadrilateral are correspondingly larger to fill the empty space between them. The quadrilateral also lacks the usual pellets in its quadrants.

In summary, the coin is a variety of a type issued by the Angevin Party during the civil war of Stephen's reign. It has an apparently unrecorded obverse legend and an unrecorded variety of reverse. The surviving letters suggest a possible attribution to the Empress Matilda, but, as with the 'Henry' and 'William' legends, it might simply be another anonymous inscription.

Description: A rare variant 'Watford' type penny of Stephen, struck at York. The king holds a flag or pennant in place of the Watford type sceptre, and there is a radiant star to the right of it. On the reverse, the legend is a mixture of ornaments and apparently meaningless letters. Flan cracked.
