Cruciform Brooch (Side Knob) https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/artefact/early-medieval/brooches/bow-brooches/cruciform-brooch-side-knob-54343.html Tue, 26 Mar 2019 13:19:42 GMT Bow brooches Cruciform Brooch (Side Knob)
Description:

A complete cast copper-alloy detachable side knob originating from an Anglo-Saxon florid cruciform brooch. The knob depicts an anthropomorphic face-mask with prominent pelleted eyes, heavy brows, cheeks and wide triangular nose. Projecting from the base of the knob are two birds of prey, or carrion, each curving around a sub-circular aperture. The heads of each bird face inwards and are cast with a pelleted eye and curved beak. Attachment to the main brooch element was effected by means of a pin, which fitted through the pair of pierced lugs on the back of the knob. Corrosion suggests the pin was made of iron.
