Description: A traditionally shaped cast copper-alloy bell with an integral sub-rectangular suspension loop of rectangular cross-section, which retains a fragment of leather. The inner wall of the bell bears the maker's name 'E READ' moulded in relief on the inside wall. The clapper is missing.

The bell is believed to have been made by Edward Read of Aldbourne, Wiltshire, between 1751 and 1753 (see References below).

Description: A large fragment of a traditionally shaped cast bell with integral sub-rectangular hanger and drilled suspension hole. The clapper is missing, but internal staining suggests that it was made of iron. Bells of this type were sometimes worn by sheep and horses, but they were also used for other purposes, such as house bells and shop bells.

For a complete example of generally similar type, see UKDFD 33965.

Description: A traditionally shaped cast copper-alloy bell with integral rectangular hanger and two parallel lines at the soundbow. The drilled hole in the hanger contained corroded iron residue when the bell was found (Images 3-4), and corrosion staining also indicates that the missing clapper was made of iron. The recorder notes that the initials RC are present either side of the hanger, but these are unclear on the images. Bells of this type were sometimes worn by sheep and horses, but they were also used for other purposes, such as house bells and shop bells.

Description: A copper-alloy bell from the Asian continent. It has the appearance of a flattened crotal bell with a sound slit, but no sound holes. Both the upper and lower halves of the bellchamber have curvilinear decoration which may include oriental script, to the lower half, a stylised (cat's?) face. The suspension loop is rectangular with a drilled hole. Apart from animal, it is possible the bell was used for costume jewellery or as an amuletic charm.
