Description: An Irish 'shilling' of Edward VI with initial mark, harp. This is a coin of the so-called 'Bungal Issue', a contemporary imitation in brass or copper of the 1552 base silver shilling with harp initial mark. The latter coin is believed to have been struck expressly for Ireland, although there is no surviving documentary evidence. The 'Bungal' coin is considered to be a forgery, although it circulated in Connacht for some time at a value of one penny. As is often the case, the legends are slightly blundered. The obverse HIB is rendered as IIB and the reverse date ends [ ]TI rather than [MDL]II.
