Description: Celtic uninscribed gold quarter stater, attributed by Van Arsdell to the Atrebates and dated 55-45 BC.

Note regarding type
As the horse clearly has a mane, the coin has been assigned to Mack 71 (VA 226-1). However, other features, like the cog without central pellet, are often associated with Mack 63 (VA 228-1).

Quarter Stater, North Thames Region (Eastern) https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/coins/iron-age/atrebates-and-regni/quarter-stater-north-thames-region-eastern-58086.html Tue, 16 Jul 2024 17:21:24 GMT Atrebates and Regni Quarter Stater, North Thames Region (Eastern)
Description: An uninscribed gold quarter stater. The type was originally attributed by Van Arsdell to the Atrebates and dated 50-45 BC. Recorded findspots, however, suggest that the type may have originated in the North Thames area. In Ancient British Coins it is designated the 'Essex Wheels' type and is catalogued in the 'Eastern' section of that work, under the heading 'Southern-style Qc gold types'.

Description: Celtic uninscribed gold quarter stater, attributed by Van Arsdell to the Atrebates and dated 50-45 BC. Although stylistically the coins are close to the issues of the Atrebates, most have been found north of the Thames.

Note
The coin is recorded on the CCI as a VA 260-1 (Mack 76A) type, which is described by Van Arsdell as being of silver. The CCI comments that this is an error made by Mack and repeated by Van Arsdell. However, Van Arsdell notes that his 260-1 is a silver version of 222-1, so arguably the attribution should be made to that type. The distinction between the two is the geographic distribution mentioned above.

Description: An uninscribed gold stater of the  'Westerham Type', attributed by Van Arsdell to the Atrebates. In ABC the coin is described as the 'Westerham South Type' and assigned to a group designated 'Regini and Atrebates', as the coins are found in the lands of both tribal groups. The authors of ABC note of this particular type:

"More Westerham South gold staters [ABC 482] are found around West Sussex and the Solent than North Hampshire, indicating that they were probably produced by the Regini, not the Atrebates."

The 'Damaged Die' variety of the 'Selsey Dahlia' quarter stater is described as extremely rare in ABC, and is unlisted in the other major reference works. The coins are often found north of the Thames - as was the present example - and were probably struck there.

Attribution to the Atrebates is tentative.
