Description: Charles I royal farthing.

The coin is a BMC Type 1d/1c (Everson Type 3/2) mule with apostrophe stops on the obverse and colon stops on the reverse. The privy mark appears to be a tun, but it is partially off the flan. Everson (see ref. below) lists just two mules of this type, both with a crescent privy mark. Neither the crescent nor the tun are found on the obverses of true Richmond Type 3 coins and no other example with a tun has been traced. The most likely possibility, therefore, is that the privy mark on the present coin is in fact a crescent, and the coin is similar to the Everson examples. The die-axis alignment is 0 degrees, which is consistent with a genuine coin.

In his standard work, English Copper, Tin and Bronze Coins in the British Museum, C W Peck discusses farthings of this type with CARA legend at some length. They may all be contemporary forgeries manufactured from official punches. They are listed as ER (Extremely Rare) by North (see ref. below).

Description: Charles I royal farthing. Privy mark, 'trefoil', obverse only. (Peck - see below - describes the privy mark thus, but adds in a footnote, "probably intended for cross pattée fitchée.")

In his standard work, English Copper, Tin and Bronze Coins in the British Museum, C W Peck discusses farthings of this type with CARA legend at some length. They are all contemporary forgeries manufactured from official punches. Everson (The Farthing Tokens of James I & Charles I) adds, "The letter punches are also official, but it is clear that the counterfeiter did not have a letter O, hence the CARA. Nor did he have a letter E, and the Es in ET and REX are created from an F punch with some attempt to turn it into an E. Nearly all surviving specimens of this illicit issue can be traced to Scarborough, where they were dumped in the castle well." They are listed as ER (Extremely Rare) by North (see ref. below).

Charles I Shilling https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/coins/stuart-commonwealth-and-house-of-orange/charles-i/charles-i-shilling-41058.html Sat, 30 Mar 2013 00:00:00 GMT Charles I Charles I Shilling
Description: Charles I shilling. The coin is a mule with an obverse of Tower Group E, Fifth 'Aberystwyth' bust and initial mark triangle (Spink 2797), combined with a reverse of Briot's first or second hammered issue with ornate harp and initial mark triangle over anchor. (The overstamped anchor is unclear due to weak striking, but has been confirmed by reverse die-duplicates.)

The UKDFD is grateful to Joe Sparey for advising that this shilling is a mule, rather than a true Group E coin, as originally identified. Record revised 28 August 2021.
