A large biconvex spindle whorl with moulded decoration on both sides. One side has four ring-and-pellet motifs and four linear axe-shaped motifs arranged alternately and symmetrically around the central hole, all within a peripheral border of pellets. The other side has six running spirals and six pairs of radial lines arranged symmetrically around the central hole, all within a peripheral border of pellets. The whorl has been heavily cleaned after recovery to remove accreted deposits.

The dating of lead spindle whorls is problematic, as similar examples have been found in contexts that span the period from the late Iron Age to late Medieval times. The decorative elements of the present whorl would suggest an early Anglo-Saxon date, as similar axe-shapes, running spirals and ring-and-pellet motifs are common on brooches and mounts of fifth to seventh century date (e.g. UKDFD 2480, UKDFD 2588 and UKDFD 40843). The relatively large size of the spindle hole is indicative of a post-Roman date, as spindle holes in Iron-Age and Roman whorls are invariably smaller.

A small undecorated cast lead spindle whorl with flat faces and a circular central hole. The diameter and thickness of the whorl are 21.55mm and 6.91mm respectively, and the central hole is 7.71mm diameter.

The dating of lead spindle whorls is problematic, as similar examples have been found in contexts that span the period from the late Iron Age to late Medieval times. The present whorl is of Walton Rogers form B1 (see References below), which, along with the relative size of the central hole, suggests that a late Early Medieval to Medieval date of circa AD 700-1200 is most likely.
