A chunky cast copper-alloy finger ring, probably dating to the Roman period. The ring is of uniform cross-section with a plain internal diameter and a centrally grooved external diameter with rounded corners. The moulding of the external diameter creates the impression that the ring consists of two coils of circular-section wire.

It would seem likely that cast rings of this type derive from somewhat earlier rings that were made from coiled strip or wire (e.g. UKDFD 3737), possibly through stages represented by UKDFD 26254, to the present form, where even the pretence of their original helical form is dropped.

For a generally similar ring, but with two circumferential grooves, see PAS: SUSS-6EA902.

Description:

An incomplete finger ring, very tentatively dated to the Roman period (see below). The surviving part of the ring consists of the bezel and a small piece of the hoop on one side. The bezel is circular and depicts an eagle perched with wings outstretched, all within a double beaded-ring border. There are traces of an uncertain brown/red deposit on the surface. The hoop is very slender and tapers very slightly at the shoulders. It appears to be of sub-rectangular cross-section.

The dating of the ring is based largely on its close similarity of design (similar eagle and double ring border) to a ring of superior quality recently sold online (see Image 3). The fact that the eagle design on the present ring is in relief would suggest that it is moulded, which would be very unusual during the Roman period. A design of this sort would normally be engraved and thus incuse. Only simple geometric shapes like annulets, crescents and crosses, used to embellish enamel inlays, were normally moulded in this way. It should also be noted that the Roman Imperial Eagle was the inspiration for the French Imperial Eagle of the Napoleonic era, and that the dating of the online ring itself has not been corroborated.
